Oh See Me

There is a drive to change everything about data centers that rhymes with OCMEE.  You see the technical wizards with enough time to do so, have started questioning why things “have always been done this way”.  And as a child of the 60’s and 70’s, I agree with Question Authority.  And I can also question their motivation.  While an elite bunch of data centers are able to afford the luxury of adopting and implementing their new designs, 99% of data centers will never have their product.  Never.  Until that is, they stop.

Every one wants to have their widget be a significant new feature.  Anyone remember Beta vs. VHS?  This is that in an exponential form. And when do they stop and say it’s finished?

In today’s data center they have the same issue as you do –> when do I buy the next iPhone, Stereo, LCD TV etc etc?  Because Moore’s Law – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%27s_law

So, what do they do?  They call it open source where everyone shares their new ideas – very altruistic.  And then they state that no one can use their name without their permission.  It’s my ball, screw you guys, I’m going home.  Bet SouthPark doesn’t sue me for that.

Oh, and you know what?  They need vendors to make their new toys.  And we’re talking big changes to the standardized stuff you see on TV and in the movies; those tall cabinets with blinky lights. Changing everything, dimensions, connectivity (where the cables go, the power cords too), the size of the computers, the list goes on. So what is a vendor to do?  Since, as soon as they invest in creating the new beta widget, a new idea comes out?  And oh yeah, all your engineering has been shared with the OHSEEMEE group.

So you pull the trigger on a new iPhone and then 2 weeks later the next one comes out, you’re still fine.  That may not apply to this effort.  You may be left in the lurch with a legacy platform that only one vendor already quit making while they chase the new design requests from the OCMe guys.

You guys rock on.  I like seeing it.  It just seems like a train wreck to the average data center manager, the vendors and all the rest.  As the kids write, SMH.  It’s not done until my idea is part of it.

I’ll post this and see if anyone ever see’s it and responds.  Leave me a comment.
